Dopamine Dressing

Dopamine Dressing

There are two elements to Mum’s outfit which ‘make’ it. The first, the tweed jacket. The second, the red cardigan around mum’s shoulders, and/or the caramel coloured shawl. If you were to take away these elements, the outfit would work but it definitely wouldn’t look as stylish. Layering textures is what makes an ensemble.

If you’re keen to put together something similar from your own wardrobe, a good place to start is by looking at your clothes, pulling out similar colours and placing them together on your bed. This will hopefully alert you to combinations that you hadn’t previously thought of. I should note, these do not need to be the same hues as mum is wearing, they could be anything from navy and blues, greys and black to reds and burgundies.

For building the outfit, start by thinking about the jacket element. You're ideally looking for a jacket in an interesting texture or pattern but failing that, a cardigan would work too. Once you have this ‘layer’ in place, check that it is the right colour to go with your coat and that it sits happily underneath. Once you have these elements in place, think about the polo neck jumper aspect - it could be a fine knitted crew neck or a fitted cotton shirt, just make sure that it is not too chunky. The trousers are next. They need to be high waisted but the shape and width of the leg doesn’t really matter. Lastly, it’s the layer over the coat - you’re looking for a scarf or a jumper in a contrasting colour to the outfit which either adds a vibrant ‘pop’ (like the red) or contrasts but is complementary with the rest of the outfit (like the caramel shawl).

I hope that this helps?

Oh, and I should probably also mention mum’s glasses. They play their part in this outfit working. The statement frames help anchor the layers and fabrics, balancing out mum’s face with the rest of her body. So if you’re a glasses wearer and you’ve been on the fence about going for a more bold frame, take this as your sign to do it! Wink, wink.

I don’t have a huge amount to say about my outfit other than it serves as a reminder that if you love the outfit, wear the outfit! These trousers aren’t the most flattering that I have ever worn but they’re up there with some the most fun. I absolutely love the colour combination, particularly with the contrasting blue of my jumper. Sometimes the ‘vibe’ of a look will trump everything else and that’s ok. It is important to have fun with fashion because at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter….!

P.S. the coat that I am wearing here is the same one that mum was wearing in our last post and the jacket that mum is wearing in this post, is the same one that I was wearing here. A true demonstration that fashion is ageless….
